Forget soufflés and Duck ala Orange, one of the niftiest culinary skills to show off to your friends has to be the ability to make your own sushi from nothing more than a few fresh ingredients and a trecherously sharp knife. Well, that's what I've always thought anyway. But prior to today, that nifty skill was not in my personal arsenal despite my obsession with the Japanese delicacy. Let's just put it out there. I love sushi. I mean, I really really love sushi. All types. Raw fish, tempura fried, vegetarian, decadent, and even simple. Give me a few mouth watering rolls and a glass of wine and I'm a happy girl. But... a year ago I made the personal choice to become a vegan and along with the choice of giving up all animal products, I've also found myself shying away from my sushi spots. It's just easier not to be tempted. I can't promise to hold true to my new values if you put a Rolls Royce roll in front of me.
A few years back, I received a sushi making kit as a Christmas gift. I never did get around to trying it out and that kit is probably still in the possession of my ex-husband somewhere in the attic. But I've always wanted to try my hand at making my own sushi but I've heard how difficult it is. Remember that scene from Sex and the City (the movie) when Samantha makes handmade sushi and lies there naked waiting for Smith to come home? Sexy.
I digress. Back to me and my sushi. So tonight I did it. I made my own vegan sushi rolls. And I must say, they were fabulous. I don't know why the entire process has received such a bad wrap. Of course the rolls I made were vegan (strictly sliced veggies). Raw fish is probably a little messier. But overall I found the process fairly simple and easy to do. And the bonus was that my local Publix carried all the supplies I needed so it didn't cost much and only one trip to the store. Now I've got a little secret weapon the next time I want to impress anyone. ;) ~ Christina
